1955 Rolex Submariner 6205

Sold

“First Rolex Sport with Mercedes Hour Hand”

Case: Excellent case in remarkable condition especially since it's 65 years old this year. The numbers between the lugs are sharp and clearly visible. The previous owner stuck scotch tape over the numbers to protect the reference and serial number. The beautiful and very rare no min hash bezel insert has faded to a stunning purple hue.

Dial: The original gilt chapter ring dial is in amazing condition. The surface of the dial has aged to a semi matte glaze finish. The gold print is sharp and bright. The hour and min hand are radium and glow faintly when exposed to UV light. The original second hand has been repainted at some point. All the markers glow faintly under UV light and the 6 o'clock marker glows brighter which is correct for this early dial variation.

Bracelet: Excellent Swiss Rivet 7206 band with 11 links and 80 end pieces. The clasp is stamped 1 55.

Accessories: None

Notes: As noted in Phillips Auction Catalog "The reference 6205 was only manufactured between 1954 and 1955, making it one of the rarest Submariners to exist."

"The ref. 6205 would later introduce one of the most distinguishing features on Rolex’s sports model – the Mercedes-style hour hand"

I'm excited to offer this insanely rare and early Submariner.
